Going to Myanmar for the third time
APELDOORN - Apeldoorn doctors Wim Theuvenet and David Schiettecatte, together with operating theatre nurse Aly Boven, will once again travel to Myanmar in January next year to assist in operations at a Leprosy hospital and give workshops to local operating theatre nurses.
It is now the third time this team has travelled to this hard-to-reach country. "It's wonderful work, what Leprosy Mission does there," Aly says. "Leprosy is still relatively common in Myanmar. Leprosy patients there are still often rejected from their village or family, but in Leprosy Mission's hospital they are treated with love and respect."
Leprosy Mission performs restorative surgery on the hands and feet of leprosy patients, among others, at its hospital. But not only leprosy patients, victims with burns and children with congenital defects (such as club feet) also come to this specialist hospital for surgery.
Aly is still looking for sponsors for the trip who would like to contribute to the travel costs. She would also like to help the hospital buy special operating theatre footwear. She has started a crowdfunding campaign for this purpose. "In Myanmar, I will provide a class for local operating theatre assistants. It will mainly be about hygiene in the operating theatre. The better the hygiene, the lower the risk of infections after surgery. This is not always easy with the limited resources they have there. I would prefer for the hospital to buy a good pair of operating theatre shoes for everyone. That would help enormously in preventing infections"
